Q: Hello, I am looking for a little help. This happens to this plant every fall. I don’t know the name of it but is there anyway to stop this from happening? It looks great all summer but I want to enjoy the fall color. Thanks

A: Thanks for the question. The plant is an Autumn Joy sedum. These are very drought tolerant and don’t like a rich soil, so don’t over fertilize and be careful about over watering. This plant also requires full sun.

One of the things you might try next year is to cut the plant in half when it is about 6” tall. That works like pinching back a houseplant. It will make it a little shorter and the stems a little sturdier and has been helpful for others that experience the same problem.

Good luck!
