Last evening the Meridian D&B store was packed with folks interested in learning about bees. (Just before the show started, an exiting customer was heard to say, “I’ve never seen so many customers in there. At first, I figured they must be giving away free puppies!”) True enough, th chairs in the center of the store were plugged out and there was standing room only with future newbies jamming the floor, all eager to learn firsthand about how to get started in beekeeping.

Melinda Stafford, helped along by her capable assistant Sam, presented a solid 90 minutes of information on the first steps necessary to start beekeeping in the Treasure Valley. With her hands-on experience running the Boise State University Rooftop Bee Farm (http://sub.boisestate.edu/sustainability/home/bee-farm/), Melinda delivered a ton of information to the overflow audience, and she accomplished her task with wit and charm. There was never a dull moment during the entire presentation.

The hobbyist emphasis this year was refreshingly different from the more commercial/industrial approach that we experienced last year on the same stage. Melinda’s understanding of the local issues and her ability to deliver the message clearly and concisely, combined with her enthusiasm and comfort in front of a large crowd, made this a top-notch introduction for the beginning beekeeper.

Good job, D&B. You certainly had the right person delivering the message in Meridian last evening. Keep it up!
