The TVCC rodeo team competes in the Northwest region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) and participates in about ten rodeos every season. There are several National Rodeo Finalists that competed in the 2013 College National Finals Rodeo last June that will be competing this weekend. Dalton Jim is ranked first in the Northwest region and third in the nation for saddle bronc riding along with being ranked eleventh in the national men’s all around standings. Other standout and saddle bronc riders, Dusty Easterday and Austin Totten are ranked second and third, respectively, for the region. Ranked twelfth in the nation and first in the region for bareback riding is Cole Slagle. TVCC has a standout in the breakaway roping competition in Tessa DeHaven who is ranked second in the region and eighteenth in the country.
In 2012, first year coach Aaron Marts was named Northwest Regional Coach of the Year for his hard work and dedication in sustaining TVCC’s program after losing their head coach, Sonny Hansen, to a rodeo accident in September, 2011. Aaron was raised on a ranch in Murphy, Idaho where he learned to rodeo and excelled all the way through college at TVCC. He won the Walt Garrison Award at the College National Finals Rodeo in 1999 under the direction of coach and friend, Sonny Hansen. Along with running a construction company with his wife, Jamie, Coach Aaron has spent many hours dedicated and mentoring the TVCC Rodeo team, just as Sonny once did for him.
Keep your eyes and ears open while at the rodeo and you might just hear a way to win a new pair of Ariat jeans from the Ontario D&B Supply!
